August brought a series of significant events and developments across the globe, many shaped by an increasingly volatile climate. Extreme heat, drought, wildfires and flash flooding — alongside the tragedy unfolding in Nepal — are reminders that climate change is no longer something we can think of as a future risk. Its effects are being felt now, and understanding what comes next matters.
Meanwhile, conflicts and geopolitical tensions continue to shift rapidly across Sudan, the Middle East and Ukraine. Developments involving Iran and the USA have once again shown how quickly a situation can change, and how difficult it can be to understand what those changes might mean beyond the immediate headlines.
There are also growing concerns around public health and food security, including the spread of Ebola and the possibility of further disruption to food supplies. None of these risks exist in isolation. Increasingly, one event can trigger or amplify another, creating consequences that are difficult to predict.
