Highlights from the ISRM London Chapter Meet & Greet
The Institute of Strategic Risk Management (ISRM) UK Hub – London Chapter recently welcomed members and guests for an engaging evening of networking, leadership insights and thought-provoking discussions on resilience and risk in an increasingly complex world.
The event brought together professionals from diverse sectors and disciplines, creating an opportunity to exchange perspectives, strengthen professional connections and explore the evolving role of leadership and risk management in today’s environment.
Building Connections Through Meaningful Conversations
The evening began with an interactive speed networking session designed to encourage authentic conversations and knowledge sharing.
Participants were invited to discuss three simple but powerful questions:
- What keeps you up at night?
- What is one personal resilience tip that helps you navigate challenges?
- What are you currently enjoying most in life?
These conversations generated a lively and engaging atmosphere, allowing attendees to move beyond traditional introductions and connect on a more personal level. The discussions highlighted that resilience is not solely built through frameworks, policies and processes, but also through human connection, self-awareness and shared experiences.
The diversity of responses reflected the breadth of expertise within the room and demonstrated the value of creating spaces where professionals can openly exchange ideas, challenges and practical insights.
Leadership Insights from James Sarner and Dr Gavriel Schneider
Following the networking session, attendees were treated to a dynamic conversation between James Sarner, UK President of the ISRM UK Hub, and special guest Dr Gavriel Schneider, President of the ISRM ANZ/APAC Hub, who joined from Australia.
Their discussion explored a range of topics including:
- The evolving global risk landscape
- Practical approaches to building personal resilience
- Leadership in uncertain and rapidly changing environments
- Influencing stakeholders and decision-makers
- The importance of communication and trust in risk management
The conversation drew on extensive professional experience and provided practical insights that attendees could immediately apply within their own organisations and leadership journeys.
The Growing Importance of Storytelling and Influence
One of the recurring themes throughout the discussion was the growing importance of storytelling, communication and soft skills in leadership and risk management.
While technical expertise remains essential, effective leaders must also be able to communicate complex ideas clearly, build trust across stakeholder groups and influence decision-making. The ability to bring people on the journey is increasingly recognised as a critical capability for achieving successful outcomes.
These insights resonated strongly with attendees, particularly as organisations navigate increasingly interconnected risks and a rapidly evolving operating environment.
Risk Management as an Enabler of Growth
Another key takeaway from the evening was the importance of viewing risk management as a strategic enabler rather than simply a mechanism for protection or compliance.
Effective risk management supports innovation, investment, organisational resilience and sustainable growth. As organisations face accelerating technological change, geopolitical uncertainty and evolving stakeholder expectations, the ability to balance opportunity with resilience has never been more important.
The discussion reinforced that risk readiness and resilience are essential foundations for long-term success.
Learning Through Shared Experiences
One of the most valuable aspects of the evening was the active participation of attendees.
Throughout the discussions, participants shared career experiences, practical examples and lessons learned from their own professional journeys. These contributions enriched the conversation and demonstrated the strength of the ISRM community in bringing together diverse perspectives to address complex challenges.
The exchange of ideas highlighted the value of collaboration and continuous learning in strengthening both individual and organisational resilience.

Looking Ahead
The evening reinforced the importance of continuing conversations around leadership, resilience and strategic risk management.
As organisations and societies face increasingly complex challenges, opportunities to connect, learn and share experiences become even more valuable. The ISRM London Chapter looks forward to welcoming members and guests to future events as we continue to strengthen our professional community and advance the practice of strategic risk management.
