In 2016, in a paper discussing the impact of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, World Economic Forum Executive Chairman Klaus Schwab wrote:
“Our world currently stands on the brink of a mass political, technological and social shift which will transform our existence in ways we cannot yet possibly know”
Little did he know that ten years later, those changes would be manifesting in multiple ways, not because of human ingenuity (though AI and its associated functions are certainly moving that way), but rather because the very fabric of the planet we live on was changing.
It seems clear that the planetary-level changes that we are currently experiencing are taking us close to the limit of what classical risk management can provide in terms of allowing us to model, prepare for and engage with the paradigm-changing risks that we are facing.
Whether it is heat, storms, drought, cold, floods, glacial collapses, infrastructure failures or any of the other events that are becoming increasingly common at the same time as they become increasingly disruptive and destructive, we need to develop a new language, metaphor, framework methodologies and list of capabilities to respond effectively and appropriately to what are fundamentally transcendent challenges.
The ISRM has been involved in these issues since its founding in 2018, and has worked with multiple organisations across the governmental, national, city and NGO communities.
We believe we are in a unique position to create a space that facilitates conversations between academics, practitioners, and policymakers that can have a real impact on how we articulate, rationalise, and ultimately engage with these problems.
