Join us on Friday, June 2nd, 2023 where the executive director of the ISRM, Dr David Rubens, will be offering a presentation followed by a facilitated discussion on Crisis Management and the Hyper-Urban Environment: From Fragility to Resilience.
As Dr Rubens states in his latest book, “hyper-urbanization, resource depletion, climate change, global warming and adverse weather events, critical national infrastructures, flood, droughts, global supply chain management and water scarcity are all things that have already started to move beyond what we had considered as classical risk management issues” (Rubens, 2023: p. 2).
Global crises were traditionally seen through the lens of rural impacts: floods, droughts, famine, but in the modern works it is cities that are most vulnerable.
Whether it is because of the collapse of over-aged and under-maintained systems, their global interconnectedness and hyper-dependencies, technical malfunctions, the pressure of the demands on limited resources or malicious attack, it feels as though the systems that underpin our urban existence have reached the limit of their capacities and capabilities.
This lecture will look at issues of urban resilience and some of the approaches that are needed to ensure that our cities of the near-future maintain their functionality in the face of ever-increasing pressures.
Furthermore, we are pleased to announce that certificates of attendance will be issued on behalf of the ISRM for all attendees. This certificate will acknowledge your participation in the workshop and demonstrate your commitment to building resilience and sustainability in our urban environments.
