Climate change, urbanisation and ageing urban infrastructures will exacerbate the risk of flooding across many parts of the world in the future. Although there has been renewed global efforts to mitigate climate change, and despite significant investment in flood defences in many places, there has been a discernible shift in recent years to encourage people to become more resilient to flooding; in other words to learn to live with water.

In this seminar, Paul O’Hare reflects on this shift in flood risk management policy and considers strategies living with water. More critically, however, he will consider whether we are already pushing the limits of our adaptative capacity and if the drive for resilience will leave many of our most vulnerable behind to deal with the greatest impacts of a wetter world.
